Quelle horreur! Paris street style takes a spooky turn
This past week, I was in the grocery store, and while I was walking around the Halloween aisle, I overheard a young child exclaiming with much enthusiasm, “Finally, it’s spooky season!” It is obvious that the uncultured infant was not in Paris during the month of September, since if he had been there, he would have been aware that the Halloween season began earlier this year.
As evidence, one need not look any further than the fashion that is being displayed outside of the SS25 presentations in the French capital. This fashion includes anything from bloody fangs and black lips to vampiric leather outfits. Not only are we talking about the line for Rick Owens, but we are also talking about other things.
Yu Fujiwara, a photographer and a frequent contributor to Dazed, was present to capture the best looks of the season. These styles included clompy boots with Frankensteinian characteristics, avant-garde skirts with devil horns, and twisted accessories that appeared to have been plucked from the extraterrestrial planet of HR Giger, a well-known fashion favorite.
In other parts of the city, Parisians who were dressed in black head coverings and masks took to the streets to demonstrate that the city’s era of incognito is not yet ended. They were joined by hunchbacks who were straight out of Notre Dame.
Still, it is not the end of it. The horror references continued with the appearance of a crimson outfit that was reminiscent of Suspiria (yep, Luca Guadagnino’s remake is still holding us in its demonic hands) and touches that were cultish and old-fashioned, which were appropriate for the religious horror resurgence that is occurring in the 2020s.
While this was going on, other fashion enthusiasts were getting dressed up as the kinds of lone survivors you would find wandering around in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse, with their clothing torn to shreds. You may also be interested in the predominance of disconnected limbs, which range from a severed set of praying mannequin hands to an embroidered witch’s claw that is curled around the seam of a jacket.
It would be impossible to conduct a comprehensive analysis of eerie and frightening street style without mentioning Michèle Lamy, of course, and the designer did not fail to deliver, as she presented Paris with a variety of black styles.
Imagine hellspawn that resembles bats and is adorned with a headgear that is turned backwards and mirrored sunglasses. Everything boils down to the fact that it is her horror show, and we are all just living in it.
