Google Tasks May Finally Get a Long-Awaited Search Bar

Google Tasks has steadily improved over the past year, gaining useful features like deadline tracking and seamless integration with Google Keep reminders. Despite these enhancements, the app has retained a frustrating limitation: users cannot quickly search through their existing to-dos or past reminders. That long-standing issue, however, appears close to being resolved.

Clues Hidden in the Latest Update

In build version 2026.08.24.96 of the Google Tasks application, hidden references point directly to an upcoming search function. Code embedded within the update includes the string label tasks_search_bar_hint, which carries the display text “Search tasks.”

Alongside the text hints, early visual assets have also surfaced. Early interface designs include a new search icon and modified XML layout files specifically structured to accommodate a search interface at the top of the app.

Catching Up to the Competition

The absence of a basic search function in Google Tasks has long been a point of criticism, particularly given how crowded task lists can become over time. Competing productivity platforms like Todoist and TickTick have supported fully functional search capabilities for years, allowing users to instantly filter through projects, tags, and individual action items.

While Google has focused heavily on merging its ecosystem by migrating Keep reminders into Tasks and adding refined date options, adding a search bar addresses one of the app’s most fundamental usability gaps.

What to Expect Next

Because these code additions and design assets are currently dormant inside the app, the search bar cannot be enabled by standard users just yet.

Google has not formally announced the feature or provided a release timeline. While the presence of layout files and icons inside pre-release code strongly indicates active development, users will need to wait for a future official update before the search bar rolls out widely.
