How to Customize Your Messages Backgrounds in iOS 26 (And the Catch You Need to Know)
Accidentally sending a private text to the wrong person is a cringe-worthy mistake that almost everyone has experienced. Android users have long relied on custom conversation themes to visually distinguish their chats and prevent these mix-ups, but Apple users were left waiting. With the rollout of iOS 26, iPhone owners finally gained the ability to personalize individual chat windows using Apple’s built-in wallpaper presets or personal photos.
Before you go ahead and set a funny image as the backdrop for a chat with a friend or colleague, there is an important detail you need to understand first.
The Big Catch: Chat Wallpapers Are Shared
Unlike setting a custom background on your home screen, changing a text window’s wallpaper isn’t just a personal visual tweak. Whatever background you select for a chat will automatically update for everyone in that thread—provided they are also running iOS 26 or higher.
Setting a background works similarly to renaming a group chat: the moment you apply a new visual, a notification appears in the conversation stating that you changed the background, complete with a date and time stamp. The other participants will see your chosen image right away.
This customization feature isn’t limited strictly to iPhones. The exact same steps and shared behavior apply across Apple’s ecosystem, including iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26.
How to Set a Custom Background for Any Chat
If you are ready to give your conversation threads a unique look, the setup process takes only a few seconds.
1. Select Your Conversation
Launch the Messages app on your device and open the specific group chat or individual text thread you wish to customize.
2. Open the Chat Details
Tap the contact name, profile picture, or group name located at the top center of the screen.
3. Tap the Backgrounds Tab
Below the contact details and quick action buttons (like call, FaceTime, and email), you will find several navigation options: Info, Backgrounds, Photos, and Links. Select Backgrounds.
4. Choose and Adjust Your Backdrop
Apple offers two primary ways to customize your background:
- Dynamic Themes: Select from four animated presets—Color, Sky, Water, or Aurora. You can swipe left or right on any theme to browse different color variations and styles.
- Personal Photos: Tap the Photo option to select an image directly from your camera roll. Your device may automatically highlight suggested travel or scenic shots, but you can browse your entire gallery. You can pinch to zoom and crop the image, or swipe sideways to apply various photo filters.
Once you are satisfied with how the backdrop looks, tap the blue checkmark in the top right corner to apply it. The change will take effect immediately for both you and the other members of the thread.
How to Remove or Turn Off Message Backgrounds
If someone else sets a chat backdrop that you dislike—or if you simply prefer the clean, default look—Apple gives you options to manage or disable the feature entirely.
Turn Off Wallpapers Locally
If you want to stop seeing custom wallpapers on your end without affecting what other people in the thread see, you can turn off the feature in your device settings:
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Apps, then select Messages.
- Toggle off Conversation Backgrounds.
Once disabled, all your chat threads will revert to the standard solid background on your device, while other participants using iOS 26 will still see whatever custom wallpapers were set.
Remove a Background for Everyone
If you applied a custom wallpaper to a chat and want to remove it entirely, go back into the conversation, tap the contact info at the top, and select Backgrounds. Tap None to clear the image. Keep in mind that resetting a thread to “None” removes the background image for every participant in the chat.
